This discussion precedes CSPP's Saturday, May 2 clinical conference with Daniel Gaztembide, psychologist and author.

Mary Daly, Psy. D. is a clinical psychologist in private practice in New Haven. In addition to her clinical work, she has worked as a trauma consultant to mitigation teams in the Federal Habeas Corpus Project and the CT Federal Defender's office. She serves on the CSPP board and CEDEA, the Committee for Equity and Diversity Education and Action.

Luke Hendren, Psy.D. is clinical psychologist at The Institute of Living at Hartford Hospital and serves in the Schizophrenia Rehabilitation Program. He has a background in object relations theory and uses concepts from modern psychoanalysis to treat psychosis. He is also in private practice and serves on the CEDEA committee.

The Talk

A "cold war" brews in contemporary psychoanalysis. Talk of "neutrality" and distance from the sociopolitical lead some to center the Freud of "abstinence" and "emotional coldness." The relational turn, by contrast, critiques this Freud, calling for deeper attention to countertransference and co-participation in the therapeutic dance. Lost in this debate is a "Living Freud" who thought that anything other than "empathy" (Einfühlung) can derail psychoanalytic treatment, and who regularly engaged themes of race, gender, and class with his patients. This presentation sheds light on this Living Freud and draws out its implications for the foundations of psychoanalytic practice today.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this presentation, attendees will:

-Distinguish between Freudian and relational distortions of Freud's clinical practice;
-Identify key concepts and practices from Freud's clinical work applicable today;
-Name how relational dynamics can betray sociopolitical tensions, and how sociopolitical tensions can reflect relational dynamics.

Meet the Speakers

Daniel José Gaztambide, PsyD, is assistant professor of psychology at Queens College, where he directs the Frantz Fanon Lab for Decolonial Psychology, and is a faculty member in the Department of Critical Psychology at the CUNY Graduate Center. He is the author of A People’s History of Psychoanalysis: From Freud to Liberation Psychology, and the recent Decolonizing Psychoanalytic Technique: Putting Freud on Fanon’s Couch, which received a 2024 Gradiva Award. He is the recipient of multiple fellowships and awards including a Mellon Foundation Fellowship, a Miranda Family Fellowship, and the International Forum for Psychoanalytic Education's Outstanding Psychoanalytic Educator Award.

Ryan Donberg, PsyD, is a clinical psychologist at the Institute of Living’s Professionals’ Program IOP. He completed his graduate training at Xavier University, his doctoral internship at Hartford Hospital/Institute of Living, and his postdoctoral fellowship at The Menninger Clinic. His clinical interests include psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic approaches to treating personality disorders, with a particular interest in transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP) and mentalization-based treatment (MBT). Dr. Donberg is co-developing an MBT-informed track at the Institute of Living, in addition to supervising postdoctoral fellows and psychology learners in psychodynamic approaches including MBT and TFP.

The conference is appropriate for professionals interested in the practice of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The instructional level of this conference is intermediate.

This conference has been approved for for 2 continuing education credits by Div. 39. Division 39 maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
