Through An/Other Lens: Multicultural Perspectives
A day in the Life of a Syrian Refugee
Ingi Soliman, Ph.D.
Sunday June 11, 2017
2 – 4 pm
Dr. Ingi Soliman will be presenting a piece of writing that is a compilation of her work with several refugee families that have resettled in CT over the past two years. It is a narrative piece written in the voice of a Syrian refugee. The presentation will engage the audience in entering the world of a Syrian refugee and her family and the struggles that are faced throughout the journey from war-torn Syria to the United States. It will address issues pertaining to trauma, immigration, cultural awareness, and the current political climate in the United States. The presentation will be followed by a discussion of how best to understand and aid this population and other similar populations in their continued journey to adjusting to their new home while taking into consideration their complicated history.
Dr Soliman is currently in full time private practice in White Plains, NY and Westport, CT where she sees individuals struggling with life transitions, including refugee status, immigration, parenthood, divorce and emerging adulthood, as well as eating disorders and anxiety disorders. She serves as a consultant to several organizations regarding issues of immigration, acculturation, and acclimating refugees, and she is on the voluntary faculty of Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC.
