JOINT CONFERENCE

CSPP/WNEPS

 "Responding to Narcissism"

Key Note Address: Michael Feldman

Discussant: Kay Long

On October 22 & 23, 2016 CSPP and WNEPS will jointly sponsor an exciting conference with a novel format: a clinically focused Saturday morning

conference will be followed by a choice of either a Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning opportunity to join our distinguished British guests in more intimate clinical workshops to discuss detailed process material. We are pleased to offer you more details below.

Clinical Conference:

Saturday October 22, 2016

 8:30 - 11:00 am

Michael Feldman will present his work with a narcissistic young woman, proud of her many attractive qualities that can indeed fascinate and intrigue her analyst at times. However, far from being self-contented, she demonstrates an intense dependence on the responses of others to sustain this narcissistic organisation. Her narcissism depends both on her capacity almost to convince herself of her own beauty, talent and goodness,

as well as her capacity to draw her object into sharing this view.

When she doesn’t succeed in evoking the admiring responses, her narcissistic structure collapses, leaving her, for a while, coping with feelings of inadequacy, guilt and shame. In the sessions he will describe, the patient felt the analyst escaped from this mesmerizing hold, and was able to view her and think about her in his own way.

Dr. Kay Long, our discussant, will highlight Dr. Feldman’s contributions to ways of working with dilemmas posed by narcissistic patients. She will also share her own reflections on the clinical material. The audience will be given ample time to offer their own questions and observations and engage the presenters in dialogue.

Clinical Workshops with Michael Feldman

and Eileen McGinley:

Saturday PM, October 22

1:00 - 4:00

and

Sunday AM, October 23

10:00 - 1:00

Our innovative format continues for those who may be interested in a fuller and deeper engagement with contemporary Kleinian practice and who are able to devote additional time and resources to this truly rare opportunity. On both Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, Dr. Michael Feldman and

Dr. Eileen McGinley will each offer a clinical workshop. Dr. McGinley, a fellow analyst at the British Psychoanalytic Society and a close and esteemed colleague of Dr. Feldman, will offer her

unique expertise on the rupture and repair of psychic breakdowns that occur during the course of treatment. A separate fee will be charged for each workshop.

In these 3 hour-long workshops, detailed clinical material from members of our own community will be presented to these master clinicians. The small group format (maximum of 20 participants) will provide ample opportunity for participants to discuss material in depth and to engage with either Dr. Feldman or Dr. McGinley. These workshops are filling up quickly, so don't delay!
