“The Meyerowitz Stories”
A Netflix original, “The Meyerowitz Stories” is a Noah Baumbach film currently playing on Netflix. Dustin Hoffman plays a morbidly Narcissistic artist with three children. They are severely tainted by Hoffman’s inability to see them as anything but slaves to his inordinately Narcissistic needs. As usual, Baumbach’s characters come with their poignant humor but are totally subjugated to their father’s whims. The film includes trauma, sexual abuse, and inter-generational parenting issues transferred from character to character.
Worthy of discussion!
Danny (Adam Sandler), Jean (Elizabeth Marvel) and their favored
half-brother Matthew (Ben Stiller) all bear the scars of their father’s Narcissism. Their father Harold, convincingly performed by Dustin Hoffman, makes no secret of his disappointment in them. He, an artist who enjoyed minor success as a sculptor, bemoans the fact that he is the only artist in the family.
The focus of our discussion will concentrate on the morbid effect of a Narcissistic Father as reflected in the interaction and behavior of his adult children.
We invite you to bring case examples that resonate with the film’s characters.
