FAIRFIELD COUNTY INVITES YOU TO A CLINICAL PRESENTATION BY

CAROLYN SCHAEFER, LCSW

“Sexual Assault: Intergenerational Transmission of Trauma and Après Coup

DISCUSSION BY GEORGE HAGMAN, LCSW

Carolyn’s paper delineates the intersection of intergenerational transmission of trauma with sexual assault in a young woman who presents with depression and catastrophic loss.  Her paper speculates that the transmission of sexual trauma contributes to the difficulty in the patient’s capacity to speak for herself. Who does my patient speak for, how does she speak and to whom, when sexual violence is shared amongst generations, and when the violence done to her is witnessed by a generation close to her, bringing complex challenges.

CAROLYN SCHAEFER, LCSW is in private practice in Rye, NY. She works with adults, adolescents and children.  She has presented her work on “Sexual Assault and Intergenerational Transmission of Trauma” internationally, most recently at the annual IARP Conference in Tel Aviv.
