The course will begin with a description of the arc of Freud’s writings, delineating the four major phases of his work. We will then explore the key concepts in Freud’s writings on psychoanalysis – the things that make something “psychoanalytic”. The readings (which will be distributed a month prior to the first session) will be used primarily as an exposure to Freud’s style and voice. We will use the readings to feel the texture of Freud’s approach, habit of thought, and manner of communication. Textual exegesis will not be expected, given the time available. We will look at Freud’s work from the perspective of Freud’s work. All subsequent courses are, in one way or another, a critique of Freud.
